NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL: 6
The Tigers beat Northwest 16-6 to advance to play Tallmadge in the District Championship. Jack McMullen improved to 8-1 on the season with the win. McMullen pitched 4.1 innings giving up 6 runs, 4 earned, on 5 hits while striking out 4 and walking 6. Richard Higley came on in relief and pitchedd 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Higley did not give up a hit and walked a batter and struck out 2.
Trailing 2-0 after the top of the 1st inning, the Tigers came right back in the bottom of the 1st inning with 3 runs. After an out was made, Charlie Greenlief walked and Dawson Pierce was hit by a pitch. Jack McMullen walked to load the bases. Donny Hardy’s ground ball out scored Greenlief to cut the lead to 2-1. Andrew Kirkpatrick was intentionally walked to load the bases. Brett Vaccaro made Northwest pay with a 2 run double down the 3rd base line to give Chagrin a 3-2 lead.
Northwest tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the 2nd. The score remained tied at 3 until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Tigers had a huge inning. Leo Fornara led off the inning with a single to right. Will Tropp followed with a single down the left field line to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Mikey Amendola followed with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd. After the 2nd out was made, Dawson Pierce was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jack McMullen made them pay for the decision by singling up the middle to score 2 runs and make the score 5-3. Donny Hardy followed by reaching on an error which allowed Pierce to score. McMullen moved to 3rd on the play. Hardy stole 2nd on the next pitch to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Andrew Kirkpatrick walked to load the bases. Vaccaro walked to push across another run and make the score 7-3. Fornara singled to center to score 2 more to make the score 9-3. Both runners moved up a base when they stole a base. Will Tropp singled home another run to make the score 10-3. Mikey Amendola followed with a 2 run single to make the score 12-3.
Northwest scored 3 times in the top of the 5th to make the score 12-6. The Tigers came right back in the bottom of the inning to get a run back. McMullen reached on an error and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. He moved to 3rd on a ground ball out by Hardy. Andrew Kirkpatrick’s long fly ball to center scored McMullen for a 13-6 lead. In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Tigers finished the game. Fornara singled to start the inning. Tropp was hit by a pitch and Amendola had a bunt single to load the bases. Greenlief walked to push across one run. Pierce was hit by a pitch to score another run. McMullen’s single ended the game because of the 10 run rule - giving the Tigers the 16-6 victory.
Leo Fornara was 3-4 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. Will Tropp was 2-3 with 3 runs and an RBI. Jack McMullen was 2-4 with 3 runs and 3 RBI. Andrew Kirkpatrick had 3 walks and a sacrifice fly. Chagrin Falls is now 23-5 on the season.
