Chagrin Falls Wins District Championship

Game Date
May 27, 2021

Dawson Pierce showed up for his team in a big way by getting the win to help the Tigers beat Tallmadge 8-6 in the District Championship.  Dawson Pierce winning a game is nothing new as he improved to 8-0 on the season.  However, he did it with a broken bone in his finger - on his pitching hand.  Pierce did what most others wouldn’t have even tried as he pitched 5 solid innings.  Pierce gave up 4 runs on 4 hits while walking 4 and striking out 2.  Richard Higley also came on and did what he usually does - throw strikes.  Higley earned his second save pitching 2 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out a batter.

Chagrin got off to a great start by scoring 3 runs in the 1st inning.  After an out was made, Charlie Greenlief walked.  After a 2nd out was made, Greenlief moved to 2nd on a passed ball.  Greenlief stole 2nd and scored on Jack McMullen’s single up the middle.  Donny Hardy followed with a triple down the right field line to score McMullen and give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  Andrew Kirkpatrick then singled through the hole on the left side to score Hardy and make the score 3-0.

Tallmadge cut the lead to 3-2 in the 2nd inning.  Chagrin came right back with 2 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  After an out was made, Will Tropp was hit by a pitch.  Tropp stole 2nd.  Amendola hit an infield single but Tropp had to hold at 2nd.  Greenlief walked to load the bases.  Dawson Pierce hit a shot to the center fielder for a sacrifice fly to score Tropp and make the score 4-2.  McMullen singled to score Amendola for a 5-2 lead.

Chagrin scored twice more in the bottom of the 4th inning.  Leo Fornara reached on an error to start the inning.  Will Tropp bunted Fornara to 2nd.  Fornara moved to 3rd on Amendola’s fielder’s choice with Amendola reaching safely.  Greenlief singled to bring home Fornara and increase the lead to 6-2.  Pierce singled home Amendola to make the score 7-2.

Tallmadge cut the lead to 7-4 in the 5th.  However, Chagrin scored an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th.  After an out was made, Pierce walked and moved to 2nd on Hardy’s walk.  Andrew Kirkpatrick singled home Justin Lewinski, who ran for Pierce, to make the score 8-4.  Tallmadge scored twice in the top of the 7th for the final score of 8-6.

Jack McMullen was 2-4 with a run and 2 RBI.  Donny Hardy was 2-3 with a run, a triple and an RBI.  Andrew Kirkpatrick was 2-4 with 2 RBI.  Chagrin Falls is now 24-5 on the season.
